Main Purpose
To be a part of a team offering a comprehensive residential service to children and young people, the aim being to ensure the physical, social and emotional care, and development of the young residents and the establishment.
Duties and Responsibilities
To assist in the development of new techniques and approaches to child care provisions
To provide a caring and supportive environment for young people that respects all lifestyle and cultural needs
To promote, safeguard and protect the welfare of each young person
To ensure the rights and needs of the young people are met as fully as possible whether emotional, spiritual, physical, intellectual, cultural or social and to promote and maintain positive anti-discrimination practices
Establish and maintain positive and trusting relationships with the young people that will promote their sense of security
To provide firm, consistent and fair boundaries in respect of the behaviour of young people and employ appropriate and agreed sanctions
To ensure that appropriate medical help is provided in cases of illness and accidents
To promote the development of a healthy lifestyle for young people
To organise and participate in group activities
To assist in the provision and preparation of meals in the home
To undertake and promote domestic duties in the home and ensure high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the home and grounds
To encourage young people to develop their full educational and vocational attainment
Team Membership
To work as a member of a team, ensuring that the on-going care of young people is undertaken in accordance with the statutory framework and Policies and Procedures of the Company
To attend and contribute to staff meetings; this involves participation and collaboration with other staff in the provision of care to enable the development of the home
To work closely and in co-operation with social work staff, specialists and other professional agencies in accordance with the role and function of the home
To support less experienced staff from time to time as part of their programme of induction to the work and operation of the home in conjunction with the Company’s Policies and Procedures
To attend staff meetings and supervision sessions
To undertake appropriate training as part of overall professional development
Administrative
To undertake routine administrative tasks and provide written reports and maintain the young person’s file as required by the Company’s policies and procedures
Compile reports, including Review, Progress and Incident Reports
Adhere to appropriate guidelines and procedures
To undertake financial management and recording of day-to-day petty cash maintenance in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures
To carry out duties in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act, adopting safe working practices, in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures
To maintain satisfactory written records and reports on the individual young person’s behaviour and attitude that can be used in casework conferences and/or Court Proceedings
To undertake duties at a higher responsibility level matching relevant experience and ability as directed by the line manager and manage individual shifts when required
Person Specification
You will be able to build and maintain appropriate relationships with young people
Develop good all round working relationships and communications, both verbally and written, with staff and within a multi-disciplinary team
Experience of working within a residential setting for children with challenging behaviour and knowledge of sanctions and appropriate methods of control
Computer literate
Knowledge of basic principles of the Children’s Act 1989
Knowledge of Child Protection and National Minimum standards
QCF 3 HSC CYP (or equivalent) or working to Level 3 Children and Young People
Be flexible and have a sensitive approach towards childcare
