It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Chairman Selby Bailey who passed away at home on Sunday 12th July 2020.
Born in Northwich Cheshire Selby Bailey served his time as a Toolmaker in Rolls Royce Motorcars in Crewe Cheshire.
The company was conceived in 1966 when Reynold Finney “ R” and Selby Bailey “S” met in a technical college while studying for their HNC’s in Mechanical Engineering and on the 5th November 1968 they set up RS Designs (1968) Limited based in Nantwich Road Crewe. Their main client at this time was Rolls Royce motor cars for whom they provided a tooling design service.
Selby promoted the business pulling in design work from a multitude of companies and in 1971 due to the volume of work the company was undertaking for the Ford motor company’s axel plant, at the time located on the Fabian Way in Swansea (Now Bay Studios), Selby moved his family to South Wales and set up a RS Designs office in Cambrian Place Swansea pulling in large contracts from British Steel, Thyssen, Dow Corning and the MOD to name a few.
Selby headed up a design team undertaking a variety of Mechanical conventional and detailed design projects which included:
- Production line arrangements
- Tunnelling machine initial design producing a scaled model
- Process unit design involving a scale model
- Specialist trunnion capable of traveling three times the speed of sound.
Due to high quality of work produced by the RSD and Selby’s ability to attract the best people, companies such as Ford and British Steel approached Selby to subcontract some of his workers into their businesses. This was the start of the transformation of RSD into an Employment business.
Selby’s mission was to expose agency profiteering, enlightening end users (clients) and workers to the high agency margins that was standard throughout the industry and encouraging workers and end users to challenge and stand up to this unfair practice much to the annoyance of the industry including the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).
On 16th August 2001 Selby took control of the company and together with his sons RSD Technology grew into the family business it is today with the focus on transparency, honesty and integratory.
Under the guidance of Selby RSD has maintained long term relationships and contracts with esteemed organisations which still stand today such as:
- Texaco, Chevron and now Valero.
- British Steel, Corus and Tata.
- Monsanto now Solutia.
- Dow Corning now Dow Silicones UK Limited
- National Power now RWE
and over the years he has won contracts and serviced the likes of Magnox Electric, BNFL, Welsh Water, Hyder, JCB and Rolls Royce.
Selby was considered by all of us that were lucky enough to make his acquaintance to always be fair, honest and sincere, a true gentleman in every way.
